[/caption] Many wonder how to strike a balance between having a memorable card and a functional one. This article will discuss 3 frequent mistakes commented on by business owners when designing a card and how to avoid making them. Card is not clear on what the business does. It is essential to have the name of the company and what the company does to help people, unless of course the name of the company, such as JodiePilates.com, makes it clear. Another exception may be if the brand is a household name. “Simple and to the point” says Debbie Mack who is head of the photography firm Milani Studios in Houston Texas. She says that, when using business cards with photos on them, “pick one image that grabs the eye of the recipient” Also, the business may want to consider leaving enough white space so that the recipient can write on the back of the card including where the met the person, what date, and who they plan to introduce them to. Card is not easily read by or accepted through card scanners. Odd shaped or sized business cards will make it difficult for recipients to run them through their business card scanners, therefore choosing a paper stock that still fits in a card scanner such as the standard business card size is recommended. Light color cards with dark writing generally show up well on card scanners. Eric Standlee of American Prudential Capital in Houston Texas & the founder of InHouston says that “clear cards are interesting, but hard to read in any environment. Simple and classy is better than round or foldout, etc.”  Robert M Garcia of Agency One in Tomball says that “16 point foldover cards don't fit in your holder and can't be stacked. I ended up tearing the card in two and just keeping the contact portion.” If the scanner can’t recognize the card, this means that the recipient of the card will most likely have to manually type your information into their contact management system. This increases the chances that the card never gets entered or may get lost by the recipient of the card. Card is missing vital information including name, phone, or email. The person’s name, title, company, phone number and email address are all essential components of a business card. Company website and social media links are also highly encouraged. There is a balance in deciding the amount of information, though. Laurel Hanz, owner of Laurel’s Florals, warns to not be boring. However she also added not to “have too much info so that the words are tiny.” It is also more vital in today’s age that the email address and website links are accurate on the card, because as Standlee explains, “the digital age we live in means most cards are looked at maybe once or twice.  Once I send an email to you, Gist.com gets your info for me and I box your card.  Hard to search paper cards.  But cards are necessary leave behinds.”

A business owner from Humble, TX attributes being able to address customer complaints quickly as one of his keys to success.  “Welcoming complaints when they occur is key, because when we fix the customer’s problem, we have a customer for life,” according to the president of , Sam White. Gail Appling, vice president of Bugmaster and daughter of White, says that it is his humility and the care he takes with each customer that sets him apart. We frequently get referrals and recommendations all the time, for instance I received a call today from a customer who has been with us for 5 years.  She called to say how much she enjoyed working with Andrew White, one of our service representatives,” says Gail Appling, vice president of Bugmaster.  These calls are not uncommon. One of the biggest challenges over the years, according to White, has been the seasonality of the business. White and Appling have learned to conserve in the slow periods and stay on course. They have also made a conscious effort to seek the homeowner versus concentrating on the larger ones so that it doesn’t hurt as badly when they lose an account.

When asked what has helped them to thrive over the years, White says “it is mainly the program that we have, it is designed to quickly get rid of the pests and to give the homeowner a sense of security that the pests are gone. Customers rarely have complaints after working with us for the first 2 months. Our extensive work upfront allows us to offer an annual guarantee, and our customers are very pleased with our service.”

Appling, who has been with the firm since 2005, is very “dedicated to the business, and her exceptional interest in the customer” according to White. Appling says that a contributing factor to her dedication is that she feels like their employees, which is part of their extended family, depends on them, and she takes this very seriously. When asked how they were able to weather the recent financial crisis, “Daddy always taught us to be fiscally conservative and give great customer service, and we noticed that our numbers stayed steady with slight increases throughout the financial crunch. Bugmaster Testimonial from Krystal Freeman Appling says that what they are doing is making a difference because ultimately, “a pest-free home is a healthy home”.  “We consider ourselves to be protectors of our client’s health since a majority of diseases start with an insect.   It’s a responsibility we don’t take for granted”.  For instance, it is medically proven that cockroaches are allergens and contribute to asthma in adults according to the and in children according to the . Even though some homeowners attempt to do their own pest control, White says that having it done professionally helps to ensure the safety of the applicator as well as the other residents of the home. For instance, in a number of situations they choose to use non-pesticide solutions in order to minimize exposure to pesticides and to protect the environment to the extent possible using their Integrated Pest Management techniques.

Another key to our success has been to make sure that our current client base is aware of the other services that we offer.  BugMaster is constantly keeping pace with industry changes and seeking to expand their product line to help better serve their client base. For instance, heading into the summer months, ants are starting to be a big concern for homeowners for fear that the ants start to come into the home due to the dry climate and lack of water and other food sources.  And the winter months bring about Rodent issues, such as Rats, Racoons, Squirrels & Opposum looking for a place to overwinter.  BugMaster takes care of these issues. In order to expand further, Bugmaster sees the need to communicate more with their existing clientele through direct contact. They are also stepping up their marketing efforts through the use of social media, such as , , and . After being in the business since 1980, White’s dream of having his family in the family business has finally come to fruition. About BugMaster - a family owned and operated company serving Houston and surrounding areas since 1980 providing pest management services. An opportunity to be part of the world’s largest professional network could be missed if requests to join LinkedIn are ignored. Many are choosing to be part of a professional network to find people and information to progress professionally. LinkedIn can help, and this is the reason that most all Fortune 500 companies have their representatives in this professional network. In July 2010, LinkedIn had over 75 million users from more than 200 countries and regions of the world. This helps potential employers build trust in their profile and learn more about an individual from their connections. Here are some of the advantages enjoyed by joining LinkedIn, a unique and fast-growing professional network: Acquire Freelance Opportunities An increasing number of people are turning freelancers today, and LinkedIn helps them find freelancing opportunities in different fields. A profile on the network should display the area of freelancing and the kind of experience one has. Those looking for experienced and professional freelancers are often searching on LinkedIn. Relevant Job Search If searching for an ideal job on job search engines and constantly failing, LinkedIn is the network to find relevant jobs through a refined search. By utilizing the right keywords and adding job preferences to the profile, one may be able to find the right opportunities. Increase Your Business Visibility LinkedIn is not only for professionals, but also for business owners. One can create a business profile and find the targeted customers in this network of professionals. Finding potential partners is also possible with a business profile on LinkedIn. A small business can easily create a company profile and individuals can ‘follow’ companies to keep updated on their activity. An example of a small business profile is the company Sales Coach Site, founded by Rollis Fontenot III. A Linkedin user also has the ability to see the demographics of other network users who work for large businesses like Starbucks Coffee Company. Business marketing and market research for the launch of new products are other business benefits one expects from being a part of this network.

    Appear in Search Engine Results
Search engines like Google use pages from LinkedIn to make their result pages more relevant. A completed profile has great chances to appear in Google search results if created using the right keywords. This further helps individuals in personal branding or companies in getting recognition for their business. Unlimited Connections One has the opportunity to form unlimited connections with others who are part of LinkedIn. One can also seek or offer advice, learn about a company or an industry, build resumes, prepare for interview and a host of other things on LinkedIn.
